LED television models have back-lighting technology that uses up to 40% less power than a conventional LCD TV, reducing both the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere and your running costs.

The new Freeview HD service will be launched soon. There are a few televisions that have an integrated Freeview HD tuner which will allow you to watch subscription free HD broadcasts without needing an extra set top box.

Other developments include 3D televisions. There has been a mixed reaction to this new technology, but read the expert review by Which? or watch the video review on the Samsung UE55C8000X below...

We are not allowed to publish which televisions have been awarded a "Which? Best Buy" but you can access all their reviews (not just televisions) for just £1 for a 1 month trial. We strongly recommend reading their television reviews as each TV is rigorously tested so you know which ones have the best picture and sound quality. Other important factors such as reliability, energy consumption and value for money are evaluated.

Is the screen the right size? Most new LCD and Plasma televisions have the format 16:9 as opposed to the 4:3 ratio found on the old cathode ray tube televisions. What does this mean? To get the same picture height that you are used to you will need to buy a much wider screen TV, otherwise you may find the picture height too small.

www.which.co.ukIn addition to the normal things that you will consider such as price, screen and sound quality, please also look carefully at the energy efficiency features of televisions. For example, many televisions remain on standby when switched off and are still consuming energy when not being used.

Other useful things that are not immediately obvious are integrated digital receivers so that you can receive Freeview without buying any additional black boxes and remote control units to clutter the house.

Finally, the latest technology is revolving around high definition (HD) resolution. Just as we had got used to the term HD Ready logo on new televisions, then the manufacturers improve the technology to give a better quality HD experience. The new HD standard is HD 1080p, giving a smoother, more film like image.

The main things to consider are:
  • Budget
  • User reviews
  • Reliability of brand & Best Buy (source Which?)
  • Energy efficiency - the more efficient, the cheaper to run
  • What size television would you like
  • Do you want next generation more expensive HD 1080p ready television or the first generation HD ready TV's?
  • Recycle your old TV
We need reviews on the following televisions. Do you know someone who has one of these?
