Want to wash a duvet? It is not just load capacity (kg) that you need to consider, but will the duvet actually fit in the washing machine! The downside with these larger washing machines is, in most cases, that they will not fit in the standard 60x60x80 space allocated for a washing machine.

The following washing machines are larger than standard and are more likely to swallow your duvet...

Buying a larger load capacity washing machine means that you may use the washing machine less frequently and hence use less water. Other things to consider include steam washing machines and washing machines that enable you to select "half load" or those that automatically detect the water requirements based on load size. We are not allowed to publish which washing machines have been awarded a "Which? Best Buy" but you can access all their reviews (not just washing machines) for just £1 for a 1 month trial. We strongly recommend reading their washing machine reviews as each machine is rigorously tested so that you know which ones will wash your clothes efficiently, quietly and with the least amount of energy consumption.

Look for a washing machine with wide, clearly-marked detergent compartmentsWhen choosing your new washing machine, in addition to the standard features that you consider such as price, capacity and will it look good in my kitchen please also look carefully at energy efficiency and water efficiency.

Evidently Britain uses more water per head than any other European country and with weather patterns changing and the cost of recycling water getting more expensive in terms of both cost and the environment, we need to change our usage patterns.

Action plan: make sure that the washing machine is full and perhaps soak heavily soiled clothes prior to washing, look for washing machines that have wash programmes that allow for half loads or, if you are only a two person household, consider a smaller size washing machine. Also, try and avoid unnecessary pre-wash cycles.

The main things to consider are:
  • Budget
  • User reviews
  • Reliability of brand & Best Buy (source Which?)
  • Energy efficiency - the more efficient, the cheaper to run
  • Size of machine - do you wash for a large family or just yourself
  • Will it fit or do you need a compact washing machine?
  • Recycle your old appliance
